Why a white page is the problem
A full-brightness white background is the worst possible thing to stare at once your eyes have adjusted to a dark room — it is not a subtle discomfort, it is a jump in raw luminance that most screen brightness sliders cannot fully compensate for. Turning the page itself dark fixes the actual source, rather than dimming the whole screen and everything on it.
Built for late reading, not just dark
One of the four available styles is specifically for this: a warm tone with low blue light, meant for reading right before sleep. It trades the crisp charcoal of the default style for something softer on tired eyes.
It travels with the file
Because the dark colours are part of the PDF itself, night mode does not depend on which app you open it in, or whether that app even has a dark mode. Open it in bed on a phone, on an e-reader, or on a laptop with the lights off, and it looks the same.
On OLED specifically
If the screen is OLED, the true-black style turns off pixels entirely on the background, which is both the darkest possible page and the easiest on the eyes at night.

Which style is best for reading right before bed?

Does this replace turning my phone brightness down?
It works alongside it. A dark PDF at low screen brightness is far more comfortable at night than a white PDF at any brightness.
Will it still be dark if I open it on a different device tomorrow?
Yes. The dark colours are saved into the file, not applied by whatever app opens it, so it looks the same wherever and whenever you open it.
Can I still read the text easily, or is it just darker?
