The problem is glare, not brightness
Turning the tablet down far enough to stop it dazzling you usually takes the notation with it: ledger lines thin out, dynamics markings disappear, and pencil annotations vanish first. A dark page solves it the other way round — the screen stops emitting a wall of white, so you can keep enough brightness for the notes to stay crisp.
Why inverting a scanned score goes wrong
Most scores in circulation are scans, and scanned paper is never truly white — it is faintly grey, blotchy, and speckled with dust. Invert that and the speckle becomes bright dust scattered across the page, while the staff lines go muddy. Scans are cleaned up before conversion here, so what you get is clean notation on an even dark ground rather than a negative of a photocopy.
Annotations and page turns
The result is an ordinary PDF, so it behaves normally in forScore, MobileSheets, Newzik or any other reader: bluetooth pedals turn pages, setlists work, and existing annotations are preserved.
